Getting a handle on your finances can bring order and maybe some peace to your life. Debt and out-of-control spending on the other hand produce stress and frustration. Just pencil and paper may work to get a budget and get going. However sometimes some simple software may make progress even easier. By measuring and tracking your financial actions, it's possible to make fast progress toward your objectives.

But who needs a complicated system that's nearly impossible to learn and tough to use? With so many options out there you may be a bit confused about which programs are really best and which are mostly a waste of time and resources. There are products that quickly lead to nowhere and will not do what needs to be done leaving you with a useless thing that has caused you to waste time and money. Some of the free software falls squarely in that category.

You find accounting software designed for home use that is of two main varieties. Popular in particular now are the web-based packages that are often free. You get quite a feature loaded package that is easy and convenient to use. Then again, the other software type resides on your computer and this more nearly resembles software that would be used in business and maybe by your accountant. Most likely you have no need for full power business accounting software which is often more complicated than most people would need for home use.

Most free web based software mostly works like on-line banking with built-in budget help. That's powerful since many folks are mostly looking for budget help, more so than accounting help. Certainly getting rid of debt and getting control of spending is a grand idea. And if that's all you need, the free on-line software may be just the thing.

However, watch out because what you may think are basic function may be completely lacking in what you get for free. Missing from low end personal accounting software is likely such basics as investment management and even insurance management. Often no accounting at all for home business is there either.

To get more features it may take a move up to a software version that goes beyond simple budget software to a package more similar to a real bookkeeping program that lacks the complications of a package like a professional accountant would use or like a larger business. But if your finances include investments or a home business there is still likely a quite simple package and less complicated that will get the job done.
