Some pickup truck covers cost enough to be quite a purchase. That would describe both many of the tilting covers as well as metal retractable covers as well. On the other hand, many soft covers work quite well to protect cargo and yet cost very little. These low price options offer value and may be worth close consideration. Here are tips for picking a cover that will work well and leave you with a positive experience.

Indeed some of the lower cost covers set you back so little that they may seem to cheap to be any good at all. Some of the soft covers are a bit higher in price but the majority are where you should look for a really inexpensive cover option. Soft cover models of several brands cost half or less of what typical hard tonneau covers will cost. That means you get a lot for a little especially as compared to the most expensive retractable or tilt lids.

Then there's the tilt hard cover race truck look that you could choose. Check out Gaylord and Undercover here... One company offers a fiberglass version and the other a plastic with about the same look but much lighter coming in at just 68 pounds for the full size version. Tilt forward lids turn truck beds to lock boxes but with restrictions on the height of cargo. Too tall and the cover will not close...

Tri-fold hard covers, as a compromise, offer several advantages. Tilting covers in either fiberglass or plastic limit the cargo height to no higher than the sides of the pickup box, that is if you want the lid to close over the load. Enter the tri fold hard cover. These covers fold forward and that means you get full bed access, but you can easily leave the cover folded open and carry whatever you want to carry. It's a way to get the advantages of a hard tonneau without the limitation of height of cargo which you get with tilting lids.

Selecting a single tonneau cover for your pickup is hard partly because there are just so many to pick from. Narrowing down the choices to just a few can be done quite quickly if price is an option. Let's face it, the most costly covers offer lots of features and benefits but at a steep entry fee. On the other hand, some of the least costly tonneaus can be had for just a little and will add value to a truck maybe beyond what you pay. It partly just depends on what you need and what you want and what is the price you choose to deal with.

Soft covers offer as their main advantage a lower cost. That does not at all mean that the lower price covers are not the right choice. Also soft covers are easy to install, adaptable to taller cargo and easy to use because of the full bed access they provide. On the other hand the hard pickup bed covers offer greater security and a quite different look and all at, in some cases, not a whole lot more cost.

One possible bed liner option worth a look is the roll on bed liner.
